for the 4th emission in the sonar base transmissions series, deeptrax records turns back to the 2005 release on the now defunct uk label scsi av. like all older sonar base releases, the original vinyl issue of transmissions from beyond hoag s object is highly sought after, with matching high prices for a decent copy. next to that, the original version had a few flaws: the labels had been flipped, and the mastering wasn t up to the current standards. the tracklisting remained the same, only the sequence of the 6 tracks has slightly changed. those familair with the other sonar base releases know what to expect: pitch-dark, well crafted electro from outer space, some with a hint of melancholy. pressed at their own pressing plant deepgrooves on an 180gr heavy weight pressing.

erell ranson has got some serious credentials behind him. the french producer has been releasing music for over ten years, landing on a range of underground labels that more recently include barba records, subwax excursions and nightflight. on this release for uk label distant worlds, he matches the vibe of label mates john shima, derek carr et al with a gorgeous set of emotive, yearning techno reflections that call to mind the early uk scene pioneered by b12, baby ford and others. this is thoughtful, heartfelt stuff that works both as distinctive dancefloor material as well as intimate home listening fare.

mahoneys voice vacillates smoothly between ghostly and falsetto, while mcnanys arrangements and instrumentation bump, click, and whirr like a lovingly tuned rube goldberg jukebox. not too surprising, perhaps, considering they named the band after a song by schizophrenic outsider favorite daniel johnston, and they cite harry nilsson and roxy music as influences.
